Professor Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger

Professor Cordonier Segger is a world-leading scholar and jurist in the field of sustainable development law and governance. She holds the Chair in Sustainable Development Law and Policy at the University of Cambridge, where she is law fellow, director of studies, and programme director for Democratising Education for Global Sustainability and Justice (DemEd Global) at Lucy Cavendish College.

She has authored or edited over 160 publications, including over 26 books in six languages, 90 articles and book chapters, and dozens of reports and expert papers. She serves as editor of the Cambridge University Press Series on Implementing Treaties on Sustainable Development and chairs the International Law on Sustainable Development Partnership under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Trained in international law, public policy and sustainable development, Professor Cordonier Segger works at the intersections of law, policy and governance related to climate change, biodiversity conservation, economic development and sustainability, with a focus on the interests of future generations and global justice. Her work spans six continents, advising governments, UN bodies, and international organisations on sustainable development treaty implementation.

Professor Markus W. Gehring

Professor Markus W. Gehring is a leading expert in International Law, European Union Law and Sustainable Development. He serves as Director of Studies in Law at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, and is a Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law.

His research focuses on the legal dimensions of the transition to a sustainable economy, with particular emphasis on international trade and investment law, and the constitutional dimensions of European integration. He advises governments, parliaments and international organizations on trade and sustainable development chapters in free trade agreements, and on post-Brexit legal frameworks.

Professor Gehring is also a Lead Counsel for Trade, Investment and Finance with the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL), and has served as a tutor in Sustainable Development Law for the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education. He frequently comments on legal developments for major international media outlets.

He has published widely on EU external relations law, international trade law, and sustainable development, including seminal works on the intersection of climate change policy and international trade rules.
